In independence North Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nationalized about 37 thousand primary schools in the country in 1973. Prior to that, all the primary schools in this country were being run by private management. And this has ushered in a new era of primary education in newly independent Bangladesh. Following this, Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina nationalized about 26,000 private primary schools that were later created in the country in 2013. Education is the backbone of the nation and primary education is the foundation of all education. From that realization, the government is implementing various programs through the Primary Education Development Program-3 (PEDP-3) worth about Tk 58000 crore, giving utmost importance to the primary education sector. At present, all children in the country are being provided free of cost brand new books on the very first day of the school year. Pre-primary classes have been introduced by creating new posts of teachers in every primary school. As a result, it has been possible to reduce the dropout rate by ensuring the admission of 100% of eligible children in primary school.


As a result of increasing student population, new buildings are being constructed and expanded in the country's primary schools. In order to increase the status of primary school teachers, the rank of head teachers has already been increased from 3rd class to 2nd class and the salary of assistant teachers has been increased. At the end of the primary education cycle, all the 5th grade children of the country are participating in the final exam similar to the national exam with one question. Since 2009, the Primary Education Ending Examination has been introduced; It has brought about massive changes in primary education. Scholarships are awarded to the children and certificates are awarded to the children through the final examination.


Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament and Bangmata Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament are organized every year to make primary school children interested in sports including physical fitness.


 


Modern computer labs have been set up in PTIs for training primary school teachers and new PTIs have been introduced in 12 districts without PTIs. Already, the process of upgradation of primary education up to class VIII has also started. Laptops and multimedia projectors with internet connection are being provided in primary schools to provide modern education to primary school children from the very beginning of their educational life. It is hoped that as a result of this, our children will be educated in modern and technology-based education and make themselves competent in the competitive world.


Under the Department of Primary Education, there are sub-conductor offices in 7 divisions at the field level, district primary education offices in 64 districts, 67 PTIs (Primary Teachers Training Institutes) for long-term training of teachers, 505 upazilas/ police station education offices and 482 upazilas/ for short-term training of teachers. There is a Thana Resource Center. Decentralization of field-level forgiveness has been done to facilitate the financial and administrative activities of primary school teachers and primary education officials.
